New travel measures

The Government of Canada is introducing new measures to help limit the spread of COVID-19 and its variants in Canada.

The new accommodation and quarantine measures were announced on January 29, 2021, and processes to support these new measures are in development.

We strongly advise Canadians to cancel or postpone non-essential travel plans outside of Canada. Now is not the time to travel.

People who travel by air for non-essential reasons, such as vacation, will face new measures and expenses when they return to Canada.

Travellers must still provide proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular test taken within 72 hours before their scheduled departure time. In the coming weeks, travellers will also be required to:

  • take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival in Canada
  • reserve a room in a hotel for 3 nights at their own cost, while they await their test results

For travellers

All hotels will be located near one of the 4 Canadian airports currently accepting international flights:

  1. Vancouver International Airport
  2. Calgary International Airport
  3. Toronto Pearson International Airport
  4. Montreal-Trudeau International Airport

A full list of hotels will be available shortly.

This new 3-day accommodation requirement will be mandatory for all air travellers arriving in Canada, with some limited exceptions. Travellers must remain in their hotel rooms. They’re responsible for all associated costs, such as:

  • hotel room
  • food
  • security
  • infection control
  • transportation

Due to these extra costs, travellers can expect to pay significantly more than the cost of a traditional hotel room booking. Travellers will complete the rest of their 14-day quarantine at their planned location once they:

  • receive a negative test result from their on-arrival molecular test and
  • demonstrate that they have a suitable quarantine plan

This includes travellers using public transportation and those taking a domestic flight to their final destination.

For hotels

Selection criteria will be shared in the coming days for inclusion on the list of hotels. To be considered, hotels must be located near one of the 4 Canadian airports accepting international flights.

The application process will be posted soon and will list all the requirements. Interested hotels may submit applications as soon as the process opens. Please visit this web page regularly for updates.
